Vibrant communities, cultures coming together, great food, shopping and entertainment. But where do you go just to meet friends? To check out a busker? To hang out for a bit? To see and be seen? As great as our suburb is - we are desperately short of public, civic spaces where we as a community, can come together.
Marrickville needs a ‘Town Square’.
Council is now drafting plans for giving us the big, grand, new public space that our suburb deserves. BUT… it will be voted on by each councillor - and they have told us - we won’t do it unless we see there is community support.
Right in the middle of Marrickville. It has lots of foot-traffic, is ringed by small businesses, sits neatly between the train station and the high street, and is the gateway to Wollies Metro, the Gym and all the vibrancy of Illawarra rd eat street!
Only problem is - right now - it’s a carpark…
In the same way that the amazing Marrickville library was built by getting developers to ‘kick in’ for a now much-loved public resource - we propose that future development in the area contribute to the cost of putting the existing Calvert St carpark underground.
Please show your support by signing up below. We promise to keep correspondence to a bare minimum - but this will keep you in touch with a fast, fun, powerful community driven plan to give Marrickville it’s heart. We’d love to have you.
